Coffee Fest caffeinates Uptown this Saturday
Calhoun Square (3001 Hennepin Ave. S.) once again grants us the gift of alertness at the 19th Annual Coffee Fest, with proceeds benefitting Second Harvest Heartland. Stop by during the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and you will find local and national vendors displaying treats and information, coffee, hot chocolate, and tea tastings, seminars and workshops, live music, and other activities. The entrance fee is a mere $9, which includes a coffee mug: your passport to that sweet, sweet nervous buzz you percolate in your brain every morning.
Check out some fun facts on caffeine after the jump.
Second Harvest Heartland provides more than 34 million pounds of food each year to various foodshelves, shelters, community centers, and after school programs. For more info on Second Harvest, visit www.2harvest.org or more info on coffee fest, visit www.calhouncoffeefest.com.
Still clutching your trucker speed? Though bad news comes out every day on the dangers of nicotine and smoking, caffeine is a vice that actually has some genuine health benefits. Check out these fun facts on our favorite beverage:
- Coffee beans are loaded with anti–oxidants that become increasingly active through the roasting process.
- One Hardvard study followed the caffeine habits of 126,000 people for as long as 18 years. Though tentative, they concluded that partaking in one to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day reduces diabetes risk. Having six cups or more a day (yikes!) reduced men's risk by 54% and women's by 30% over non–coffee drinkers.
- Caffeine is also believed to reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Many of the newer drugs in development for the progressive illness contain caffeine components.
- Caffeine is also a common ingredient in drugs used to treat asthma and migraines.
- Caffeine is believed to increase athletic performance and endurance. The Olympics committee deemed it a "controlled substance", meaning Olympic athletes can only consume it in small quantities.
- Currently on oral contraceptives? Birth control pills actually slow the metabolism of caffeine. Those on the pill are more likely to experience a greater caffeine high.
- Why do some people need cigarettes with their coffee like some need cookies with their milk? Smokers tend to metabolize caffeine two times faster than non–smokers. And they are less likely to feel the negative effects of caffeine.
- The United States is the biggest consumer of caffeine in the world.
- Coffee shops are the fastest growing sector of the restaurant business.
