Seafood importer accused of passing off cheaper fish as pollock

A Chaska seafood importer and distributor has been passing off something called "snail meat" as pollock according to a lawsuit filed last week in Hennepin County District Court.

A former employee of the company, HL Seafood Inc., says he was fired in retaliation for calling them out on buying the cheaper alternative and lying about its identity.

According to the suit, when the man brought his concerns to management, he was told "not to be concerned and that that is the way business works." The suit describes the meat as "a local Chinese fish that can be substituted for Pollack [sp]."

It is not known whether HL Seafood supplies local restaurants or supermarkets.

The man's lawyer was not available for comment.

Something smells fishy.
