Farmers markets: Let's jump the gun, shall we

"Arewethereyet?" "NO." "Arewethereyet?" "NO." "Arewethereyet?" "BART!!!!" It's easy to feel all whiny and squirmy a la Bart Simpson this time of year as we waitwaitwait for our local farmers markets to set up shop (or, in some cases, shift their winter operations outdoors).

Even though we have nearly a month to wait before the first summer markets pitch their tents and roll out their wares (usually an abundance of various greens, rhubarb and the odd root vegetable or two kick off the season), somehow knowing WHEN we'll get there sort of satisfies the antsyness of not being there quite yet.

Get your canvas bags ready. Here are the start dates for a few of the heavyhitters:

April 25:

St. Paul Farmers Market (open Saturdays 6 a.m. - 1 p.m, Sundays 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

Minneapolis Farmers Market (Lyndale) (open daily from 6 a.m. - 1 p.m)

May 2:

Midtown Farmers Market (open Saturdays only, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

Minneapolis Farmers Market (Nicollet Mall) (open Thursdays from 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.)
