Klobuchar says U.S. food safety efforts should model Minn.'s

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar has proposed a $20 million overhaul of the country's food safety system, which will likely be modeled after Minnesota's own well-known and widely respected foodborne illness detection efforts. Klobuchar, who remains Minnesota's sole U.S. senator, said she will introduce legislation to begin the process of making such changes soon. The Strib reports the bill "aims to improve coordination of foodborne illness tracking, develop better tracking tools, expand the use of existing methods and promote shared registries for long-term follow-up of diseases." Most recently, Minnesota's agriculture and public health officials, aka "Team Diarrhea," won recognition for tracing the recent salmonella outbreak to a Georgia peanut plant.
