Now doesn't this just make your heart swell with civic pride just the teeniest tiniest bit? MPR reports that the city of Minneapolis is funding a rooftop herb garden at the downtown Hennepin County Medical Center. The fresh herbs will be used by the hospital cafeteria as well as for "the traditional Hmong postpartum meal."

A more complex roof top garden would involve covering the roof with soil. It requires a membrane to be first installed to protect the roofing material from leakage. Then a layer of substrate, such as gravel is added to provide drainage.
