Recession has USDA prime steak selling cheap
The Wall Street Journal writes that fewer people eating out at steakhouses, and those that are have an expanding array of options -- like Japanese Wagyu, Niman Ranch, and anything grass-fed. The upshot? Steakhouses are buying less USDA prime cuts of beef, meaning you, the consumer, can get it cheap, and at places like Costco and Wal-Mart even.
There are other reasons for the price drop, the article says. For one, smaller, specialty ranches are expanding their herds. Also, people are in general buying different, poorer cuts of meat, allowing places like Whole Foods to buy whole animals and pass savings along to consumers.
