A federal law that went into effect Friday in Minnesota requires stores that accept Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) coupons to offer more kinds of fresh produce. According to the Minnesota Department of Health:

The 141,000 women, infants and young children participating in the program will be able to receive a variety of healthier foods, including fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables; whole grain products such as bread, tortillas, brown rice and oatmeal; jarred baby foods and soy beverages; and tofu.

In tandem, a Minnesota law went into effect requiring some organic food options for WIC participants. Our only question: Why weren't healthy foods a staple for WIC right off the bat? Jeez.
