Enviro foodie ethics: charcoal or gas?

Mother Jones turns around a quick, reasoned article on the ethics of barbecuing, specifically, a cost-benefit analysis on charcoal vs. gas grilling. Basically, gas releases less carbon dioxide into the environment, but if you're going to get preoccupied with that, the article reminds us, don't forget that the meat you consume generated greenhouse gas emissions along the way too, in varying degrees (beef, by far, being the worst.) So, the verdict?

Char if you must (and you can pick a low-smoke charcoal ...) but whatever kind of grill you choose, consider this rule of thumb: In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, one burger is the same as 3 pork chops, 6 pieces of chicken, 2 salmon steaks, or 21 pieces of mackerel.
