Bring on the Indian food! An English cancer research team has revealed in the British Journal of Cancer that the principal component of the bright orange spice turmeric, called curcumin, can actually kill cancer cells in the body.

One member of the research team said:

"Scientists have known for a long time that natural compounds have the potential to treat faulty cells that have become cancerous and we suspected that curcumin might have therapeutic value."

Another expert, the director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, commented:

"This is interesting research which opens up the possibility that natural chemicals found in turmeric could be developed into new treatments for oesophageal cancer."

Turmeric may be found in many other South Asian dishes in addition to Indian and some African cuisines as well.
