No. 90: May Day Cafe croissant

While butter's perfectly comfortable running around in its birthday suit -- shamelessly waiting around to be melted over baked potatoes or asparagus, heaped on a crisp baguette or drizzled on top of popcorn -- it also, most definitely, likes to get dressed up. Take hollandaise, which you could think of as butter's way of donning a classic, elegant evening gown. Or consider shortbread, which is like butter easing into its most comfortable house clothes yet still looking presentable enough to entertain. You can think of May Day's croissants then as like butter's little black dress: simple, reliable, sexy, and they make everyone go "Da-ammnnnn!" Each one is like a puff of buttery air that has been captured and cloaked in a paper-thin crust, and each precious, delicate bite quickly dissipates to nothing like cotton candy. Now what could be better than that. Every occasion is a special occasion with these hot and spicy little numbers.
