100 Favorite Dishes: Osso bucco at the Modern

So we're totally in love with the pot roast at the Modern--who isn't? The urge to order it is so strong, that we practically had to hold back our pointing hand as it passed by the pot roast to move it down the menu and pick out the osso bucco. But it's 2010, and we're mixing things up, right?

In some ways, osso bucco is not such risk, as it might be considered a pork-based alternative to pot roast: a berkshire hock cooked until the meat pulls right off its central bone. The dish is found mostly at Italian restaurants, and this preparation was new to us and to the Modern (it just arrived on the menu last week): stewed chickpeas and mushrooms are brightened by bits of preserved lemon and fresh mint, to give it a bit of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern flair. It's something both strange and familiar--not to mention delicious.
