Bacteria: It's not just for ground beef anymore

The next time you reach for that Big Gulp, you may want to reconsider. The Smithsonian's "Food & Think" blog reports on a new study by the International Journal of Food Microbiology that found coliform bacteria in nearly half of the soda samples they tested, and of those, most of them were antibiotic-resistant. Blech.

The scientists concluded that such soda fountains "may contribute to episodic gastric distress in the general population," or more serious consequences for immunocompromised people, revealing a need for better hygiene regulations and enforcement.

It's gonna take more than the threat of gastrointestinal distress to knock fountain soda off its pedestal of superior summer thirst-quenching though.
