E. coli outbreak infects dozens in 16 different states
Another year, another E. coli outbreak. An Oklahoma meat manufacturer is being cited as responsible for the shipment of potentially close to nearly a quarter of a million pounds of beef tainted with E. coli. The Washington Post reports that nearly two dozen people in 16 different states have contracted the bacteria after eating tainted meat at various restaurants, including the chains Moe's and Carino's.
The outbreak spurred the company, National Steak and Poultry, to voluntarily recall 248,000 pounds of beef Dec. 24. The products, which range from steaks to sirloin tips, were packaged in October and shipped to restaurants, hotels and institutions nationwide, according to the company.
Nine people have been hospitalized in Iowa, Michigan, Kansas, South Dakota, Washington, and Colorado after getting sick.
