Now Open: Piccolo
Doug Flicker wants his new South Minneapolis restaurant Piccolo to be the type of place a group of people come in and spend a couple of hours, visiting and sharing any number of the restaurant's smaller-portioned dishes, and leave fully satiated but without necessarily feeling full.
"I don't really know if there's a name for it," Flicker says. "Sometimes we'll tell people small plates, but me personally, small plates is just a size down. I would like to think I'm creating balanced, whole dishes ... I like to kind of think it's breaking new ground a bit."
Piccolo's groundbreaking officially commences today. The highly anticipated restaurant -- it already has more than 400 Facebook fans -- opens tonight for dinner in the spot formerly occupied by Cafe Agri.
It's an intimate space, with just 32 seats, and neighborhoody surroundings. The menu has just 15 items --12 savory and 3 desserts, all curated by Flicker (this is his first time doing desserts) along with fellow chefs Polly Nielson and Dan Berger.
Here's a peek at some of the dishes -- all priced roughly between $6 and $15 -- the three have in store:
- Escargot with artichokes, soft polenta and hen-of-the-woods mushrooms
- Scrambled eggs with pickled pigs feet and truffle butter
- Black cod with smoked celery pancetta and hazelnuts
- Lamb crepinette (lamb confit mixed with ground lamb) with squash confit, olives and quince
- Bitter almond cake with vanilla ice cream and brown butter honey
The restaurant's wines, selected by co-owner James Andrus, are reasonably-priced as well, with most ranging from $23-27 per bottle. A glass of house wine is $4.50. The wine list consists of about a couple dozen bottles, about evenly distributed between reds and whites.
Flicker plans a rotating menu and hopes to eventually expand it. "We're going to see how it goes, hopefully grow the menu and keep pushing the boundaries," he says.
"Everything around me to an extent is an inspiration, every day coming here and trying to create something better, and the feeling I have when I leave has been missing for the last couple years."
