Pringles flavors recalled over salmonella fears

There's always seemed to be good reason to be wary of wacky snack flavors (JalapeƱo Popper Doritos, Pepperoni Pizza Combos, and ketchup-flavored chips immediately come to mind). But now there's a legitimate one.

Procter & Gamble, the parent company of Pringles, has recalled the "Cheeseburger" and "Taco Night" flavors of its popular chips as a result of salmonella being detected on the equipment of a company that provides hydrolyzed vegetable protein, a flavor enhancer, for the products. Hmmm.

The Street reports that several other companies that use flavor enhancers from Basic Food Flavors have taken their items off shelves as well:

McCormick (MKC) pulled packages of French onion dip mix, vegetable dip mix, onion gravy mix and corn stuffing mix, all of which contained hydrolyzed vegetable protein manufactured by Basic Food Flavors.

Meanwhile, both CVS Caremark (CVS) and Safeway (SWY) recalled certain pretzels from the National Pretzel company and Kroger(KR) removed Dean's brand dips from its shelves.

Maybe you should stick to Kleenex, soap and razors, Procter & Gamble.
