Tanpopo's Mackerel Teishoku: 100 Favorite Dishes

No. 50: Tanpopo's Mackerel Teishoku

It's been years since we've heated up an American TV dinner and dug into its little compartments of grainy mashed potatoes, wrinkly peas, gravy-topped mystery meat, and that gummy cobbler thing that tastes vaguely like a warm, Jell-o-bread sandwich. But we're forced to recall it every time we compare it to its Japanese cousin, the teishoku, or set meal. The ones at Tanpopo are just so...meticulous...so civilized...and one of our favorite ways to blow 10-12 bucks.

The mackerel or saba, comes with glistening skin and buttery flesh you can pick away from the bones and pair with bites of rice or green salad with Japan's signature, addictively umami-rich dressing. Every detail is a delight, from the pretty presentation on the tray of the accompanying Japanese pickles, lemon wedge, and tiny soy sauce pot. Each one is a reminder of how much care Tanpopo puts into its simple but excellent meals.
