The Hump restaurant in CA charged w/serving endangered whale meat
The AP reports that producers of the Oscar-winning documentary, "The Cove" helped orchestrate a video sting to prove that The Hump in Santa Monica was serving and endangered species of whale.
Activists posting as customers made several visits in which they used secret video cameras to record their experience and pocketed samples that were later lab tested and identified as Sei whale, endangered species protected by international treaties, documents said. Agents seized some suspected whale meat when they searched the restaurant last week and are awaiting test results. While Sei whale meat is commonly eaten in Japan, Korea and Norway and in Alaska and Canada among native peoples, it is illegal to export the meat.
Federal prosecutors have filed charges against the owner of the restaurant and its sushi chef. If convicted, the company could be fined up to $200,000.
