Why jerky? In addition to being a jerky nut herself, Hell's Kitchen co-owner Cynthia Gerdes says she cemented the idea after noticing an East Coast trend of bars selling out of small batches of jerky within hours. "Hell's Kitchen is going to start offering 'small batch' jerky soon, and we thought this would be a great way to find out what's out there as well as possibly find a few great little vendors," she says.
Entrants will fall into two categories, about equally divided between individuals and restaurants--including Dixie's. While the majority of the entrants are from the Twin Cities, Gerdes says, one entrant is coming all the way from New York and another is driving up from Iowa.
Voting starts at 7 p.m. Winners will be announced after the end of the evening's NCAA Final Four Championship game, which will be broadcast at the restaurant. The winner will receive a $300 prize and a shot at getting his or her jerky sold at the restaurant.
Think you'd like to throw your hat in the ring? There's still time. Call Gerdes at 612.867.1919 or email her at cyn@hellskitcheninc.com to express your interest. The contest is by no means limited to beef, Gerdes says. Turkey, venison, and vegetarian entries are welcome, she says.
