They call it the Olympics of Beer--the biggest commercial beer contest in the world. The biannual Brewer's Association World Beer Cup, held last week in Boulder, featured 3,308 entries and was judged by 179 experts from 26 countries.

St. Paul's Summit Brewing Company took first place in the Classic English Style Pale Ale category with their Summit Extra Pale Ale. The EPA was Summit's first beer, launched in 1986. It beat out Michelob's Pale Ale and the Heavy Seas Pale Ale, from Baltimore's Clipper City Brewing Company, along with 26 others.

Classic English pale ales, according to the Brewer's Association, "are golden to copper colored" with "earthy, herbal, medium to high hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma" and "medium malt flavor and aroma."
