Azia does tequila 101, Bulldog does nerd-fest: The Week in Food

to do list.jpg

There's lots of learning on the menu this week from French cooking to how to eat local to being vegan. Avoid brain overload with plenty of wine and beer tastings, as well as tequila. Mm . . . tequila.

Monday, 5/24

  • We don't care where the wine comes from, as long as we've got a full glass. If you're the type that hungers for more (wine and knowledge), check out Wines from Where?--a tasting of wines from around the world, including some that have only recently become available. $35. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pairings Wine and Food Market, Minnetonka.

  • Turns out there's more to tequila than a dash of salt, a squeeze of lime, and a night of bad decisions. Learn how to discern the distinct flavors of various tequilas and drink them right--slowly and on the rocks--at Azia's "Tequila 101." Reservations are required. $30. 7 to 9 p.m.

Tuesday 5/25

  • Lucan, Minnesota, may be small (population 220), but it has a mighty brew in Brau Brothers. Join the brewing company at Pairings Food and Wine Market in Minnetonka for a five-course meal paired with various Brau Brother's ales. $50. 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

  • While we were under the impression that being Spanish automatically made you cool, apparently there are Spanish nerds, or "frikis." Raise a glass to nerds around the world at Frikis Fest, a celebration of International Geek Pride Day, founded in Spain in 2006. Play trivia and board games (naturally) and nosh on geeky grub (chicken nuggets with a truffle dusting) at Bulldog NE. Visit www.nerdsatheart.com for more info. 7 p.m.

Wednesday 5/26

  • What's sexier than speaking French? Knowing how to cook French-style food. Up your game with "French Feast," a French cooking class at Roseville Area High School. Learn how to make a five-course meal including vichyssoise, potato galettes, and saffron rice. $33. 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

  • If dessert is more your style, head to St. Paul's Cooks of Crocus Hill for "A Little Something Sweet" where guests will make small treats with Chef Kevin Ryan including, chocolate-cranberry mini-tarts, raspberry and cream cheese pound cake tea sandwiches, lemon-mint butter cookies, and more. $65. 6 to 9 p.m.

Thursday 5/27

  • Who doesn't love Julia Child? The woman invented the butter massage. Learn all of Julia's tricks at "Creating the Recipes of Julia Child" at the Chef's Gallery in Stillwater, the first of three classes through June 10. $85. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Friday 5/28

Saturday 5/29

  • Despite nine months of subzero temps, it is possible to eat local year-round in Minnesota. Just ask Shelley Holl and B. J. Carpenter, authors of The Minnesota Table. The two will be on hand at the St. Paul Farmer's Market to discuss their book and demonstrate recipes. 9 a.m. to noon.

  • Crop mob! Not only is it fun to shout, it's fun to do. Lend a hand at Riverbend Farm, planting tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants and weeding onions. Hard work will be rewarded with a delicious lunch. RSVP to info@simplegoodandtasty.com. 10 a.m. to noon.

  • Join Al and Alma's Supper Club for a six-tier wine stating aboard the Bella Vista. Watch the sun set on Lake Minnetonka and sip on featured wines from Kendall Jackson vineyards. $50. 6 to 9 p.m.

Sunday 5/30

  • Vegans: Do it right. Stop by the Minneapolis Whole Foods for "Spring and Summer Vegan Dishes." Learn how to make tasty and nutritious recipes with a conscience. $25. 6 to 8 p.m.

Monday 5/31

  • Get smart (and tipsy) this Memorial Day. Join fellow trivia-heads for King's Wine Bar trivia night. Not only was the Grand Avenue spot voted City Pages' Best Wine Bar, it claims to have the best pub trivia in Minneapolis. Play starts at 8:30 p.m.
