Muddy Pig celebrates 8th birthday tomorrow with half-price drafts
The Muddy Pig, City Pages' winner this year for Best Beer Selection in a Bar, is throwing a birthday party for itself tomorrow, but it's customers will be getting the presents--half-price on all draft beers, all day.
With Saturday's all-day deal, you'll be happier than a pig in mud
The Muddy Pig's beer list makes that an enticing proposition, with nearly 50 expertly curated brews on tap. The boutique beers run the gamut from popular locals (Surly Furious, Fulton Lonely Blond) to more obscure domestic and imported mugs (Left Hand Chain Saw from Colorado, La Trappe Isid'or from Belgium).
Here are more details on what you'll find tomorrow:
The scene begins at 11:30 in the morning and runs till closing at 2 a.m. The Muddy Pig has been throwing birthdays for itself for the last four or five years, says owner Mark Van Wie, and based on past experience beer seekers will have to contend with some crowds, but Van Wie says it's generally manageable. "It's pretty much a steady flow of people. It never seems to get crazy crazy. I don't remember any time when we got crushed. You can only sit and drink beers for so long."
Even so, Van Wie says, "If I were attending [as a customer], I would come early, or in late afternoon. But it's just completely a crapshoot."
We asked Van Wie if he had a few recommendations of what to try. "The local beers are always a good thing," he says, such as Summit (five brews, including Horizon Red and Oatmeal Stout), Fulton (Lonely Blonde and Sweet Child of Vine), Surly (Furious and Bitter Brewer), and Lift Bridge (Crosscut). He'll also have some newer beers from Odell, Great Lakes, and others on hand.
"We've got quite a few Belgian beers. Those are always the first to go" Van Wie says, partly because they're more expensive and a better half-price deal. The Belgians Delirium Tremens and Hoegaarden are two of his favorites.
