Now Open: Uptown Cafeteria and Support Group
Today's the big day for Uptown Cafeteria and Support Group to make its debut. The space has a retro-mod vibe, and the rooftop Sky Bar should be one of the hottest seats in Uptown, save the Benjamin-sucking onesacross the street at Stella's. (If you can't get a spot on Cafeteria's top level, the Lake Street-facing interior wall holds a series of garage door-like windows that can be opened in nice weather.)
If you want to check out the menu being prepared by chef Jeff Anderson, formerly of Salut St. Paul, it's up on the website. Most of the food is homey stuff--chicken and waffles, hot turkey sandwich, beef goulash, all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry--with a few ethnic dishes like chicken curry masala tossed in for good measure. Weekend brunch includes cereal--are people really going to pay $3.95 for Lucky Charms? Don't answer that--and homemade Pop-Tarts, which I'm rather curious to try.
My tipsters hit the soft opening party and referred to its menu as "a more hip version of Pearson's in Edina." They reported that the goulash and mac and cheese were both good but not great, and that the walleye corn fritters and buttermilk fried chicken were better.
Fans of Figlio's $3 happy hour will be glad to know that Uptown Cafeteria, like Il Gatto, has one. It's Monday-Saturday 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Thursday 10 p.m. to midnight, and Sunday all day--on the ground level only.
