How fast can this baby go?

The Pedal Pub's top speed clocks in at just five miles per hour. But cyclists will test its outer limits on Sunday, when teams race each other down blocked-off streets in Northeast Minneapolis.

Pedal Pubs typically offer a leisurely ride. Pedalers can drink on the road while a designated driver handles the steering. One of the riders can serve as "bartender," and others can sit in the back and not pedal at all.

That doesn't mean the Sunday sprints will be easy, however.

The Pedal Pub weighs 2,234 lbs.

The pedal pubs weigh more than a ton, so participants should expect a pretty good workout.

Teams waiting to race can buy drinks, listen to live music and purchase food from the Red Stag Supperclub.

The event is sponsored by the NorthEast Minneapolis Business Association. Scott Parkin, a realtor and member of the association, said 30 teams have already signed up and he thinks the turnout will be huge.

The cost is $120 per team, which breaks out to about $10 per person. Check-in starts at 11 a.m. at the Surdyk's parking lot at East Hennepin and University avenues. The event runs until 5 p.m. For registration information, vist the Northeast Minneapolis Business Association's website.
