There was a time when simply eating your veggies was thought to be the road to health. Now, things are much more complicated. The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit dedicated to researching health issues, released their list of the "Dirty Dozen," the twelve types of produce found to have the most pesticide residue, even after being power washed.

Although thought to have other benefits, celery topped the list, with non-organic found to carry 67 different types of pesticides. The group acknowledges that organic produce might be too pricey for some shoppers, or not available in certain areas; the list is intended as a guide of the best to buy organic, or avoid.

The "Dirty Dozen:"

  • Celery

  • Peaches

  • Strawberries

  • Apples

  • Domestic blueberries

  • Nectarines

  • Sweet bell peppers

  • Spinach, kale and collard greens

  • Cherries

  • Lettuce

The group also lists the produce found to have the lowest amount of pesticide residue, and are considered the safe to buy non-organic.

The "Clean 15:"

  • Onions

  • Avocados

  • Sweet corn

  • Pineapples

  • Mango

  • Sweet peas

  • Asparagus

  • Kiwi fruit

  • Cabbage
