Surdyk's is a Twin Cities institution and has been serving consumers since 1934. Today through Saturday, Surdyk's Heart Healthy Sale is offering 20 percent off all of its wines.

In 1979 Surdyk's moved to its current Northeast location and over the years expanded its business by selling fine cheeses and olive oil and increasing its shelf space for fine wine. Owner Jim Surdyk (third generation) knows how to market and deliver a product, and his shop's reputation is built on several factors:

  • A knowledgeable and experienced staff
  • In-store tastings. The store has a variety of worldwide offerings to sample during its sales, especially this Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., when you get to sample out of a real stem.
  • Organization. Everything is labeled, and if you can't find something just ask. The staff is helpful and enjoys talking about wine.
  • *Technology. Surdyk's electronically informs customers about sales and upcoming events. You can even buy wine online and have it delivered. Another website extra: a food and wine pairing feature that can make your dinner parties run smoothly
  • German riesling. Surdyk's has an exclusive with Terry Theise imports, and it has the best selection of German rieslings in the state. Look for names such as Donnhoff, Christoffel, Selbach-Oster, and Hexamer.
Also this weekend, football legend Mike Ditka will be in the store on Saturday, June 5, from 1 to 4 p.m. signing purchased bottles of his wines. Let's hope the wines are a little smoother than his personality on the field.

Surdyk's is at 303 East Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis, or check them out at their website.

My five picks for the sale are:

2007 Joh Jos Christoffel Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett Riesling $19.99
One of the best wines under $20 I have ever tasted from Germany. Aromas of tangerines, lemons, slate, and floral. On the palate this wine is in perfect balance and has an amazing finish. The town is Urzig, and vineyard site is Wurzgarten, which means "spice garden." 94 points

2006 Chateau Tournefeuille Lalande de Pomerol $27.99
A solid Right Bank Bordeaux blend with a nose featuring cherry, plum, vanilla, and oak. Medium tannins, and the palate is powerful. This wine should age for five plus years with proper storage. 91 points

2007 Tiera Alta Reserva Colchagua Valley Carmenere $12.99
A brilliant effort from Chile with minerals, spice, coffee, and cranberries. This wine gets better on days two and three. 91 points

2006 Bodegas Cosme Palacio Rioja $11.99
This Spanish red has aromas of leather, spice, scorched earth, and oak. The palate and finish is earth dominated and shows good acidity. Hard to find a tempranillo wine under $15 as good as this one. 88 points

2007 Louis Martini Reserve Napa Valley Chardonnay $9.99
One of the best chardonnay wines on the market for under $10. This will rival the $30 California chardonnays. Lemon, orange peel, mineral, and light oak frame this wine. On the palate and finish it picks up a cream quality. Nice porch wine with cheese. 90 points
