Surdyk's Summer Sale begins: 10 picks for your summer party
There is no better time to shop for quality wines than during a sale. You can easily save $3 to $10 a bottle, which you can use to buy more wine. Surdyk's big summer wine sale runs today through July 24, and with the store's try-before-you-buy approach, consumers can sample over 10 wines daily (10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.) for free. On Friday and Saturday the samples are continously flowing. One of my favorite importers, Acquitane, will be pouring some great wines from Bordeaux on Friday and Saturday.

If you want to impress your friends, pair the wines you find at Surdyk's with summer party food, using the following guide.
As Guests Arrive
It's always great to start a party with bubbles, and they don't have to be from Champagne. In the U.S. we refer to the wine as "sparkling."
2005 Argyle Willamette Valley Brut Sparkling Wine $19.99
This is one of the best sparkling wines in the world for under $20. It features lemon, minerals, dough, and tropical fruit. It's great to serve as an arrival wine, but it also pairs with chicken, light cheeses, and fish. 90 points
Also serve: 2007 William Fevre Champs Royaux $15.99 or 2008 Hexamer Quartizit Nahe Riesling $14.99
Pass the Cheeses
Rose wines in summer are perfect for a variety of cheeses. Ask the Surdyk's staff about cheese, as they have one of the best cheese shops in Minnesota.
2009 La Vielle Ferme Rose $6.99
From the producer Perrin & Fils. This wine is refreshing and reveals strawberries, spice, and minerals. Also try with grilled chicken and salmon. 87 points
Also serve: 2007 Columbia Crest Vineyard 10 Rose
Fish and Shrimp
There's nothing like the flavor of grilled fish and shrimp, and these wines will enhance the experience.
2006 Grigich Hills Estate Grown Napa Valley Chardonnay $29.99
A great price for this wine, which has aromas of minerals, lemons, floral, and oak. On the palate it is not too oaky, and the fruit is the real star. Medium and balanced finish. 91 points.
Also serve: 2007 Chateau Ste. Michelle Indian Wells Chardonnay $12.99
2008 Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc $15.99
Light gold and classic New Zealand S.B. with grapefruit, grass, and minerals. A nice wine with shrimp, raw or grilled. 89 points
Also serve: 2008 Nobilo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc $8.99
2007 Bergstrom Cumberland Reserve Willamette Valley Pinot Noir $27.99
This will sell out fast. This is an amazing wine from an underappreciated vintage. The wine showcases a lighter side of the Willamette Valley, with strawberry, raspberries, cherry, and spices. This is an easy-drinking wine that should be consumed young, but it's classy. 94 points
Also serve: 2008 A to Z Oregon Pinot Noir $15.99
Red Meat Wines
2007 Perrin & Fils Reserve Cotes du Rhone $8.99
My go-to Cotes du Rhone, which features blackberries, spices, and stones. Medium concentration and fruit-forward finish. 88 points
Also serve: 2007 Les Hauts Chassis Crozes-Hermitage $16.99
2006 Chateau Mongravey Margaux (Bordeaux) $24.99
One of my favorite Bordeaux wines under $25. Dark purple with cherry, plum, gravel, and subtle oak. Medium finish and drinking well right now. 91 points
Also serve: 2006 Chateau Tournefeuille Lalande-de-Pomerol $24.99
simi Simi Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2006 Simi Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $16.99
Cherry, spice, vanilla oak. Big wine for those who like the oak and vanilla flavors. Pair with steak. 90 points
Also serve: 2005 Columbia Crest Walter Clore Bordeaux Blend $28.99
2006 Big House Red "The Prodigal Son" Petite Sirah $7.49
Blueberries, black pepper, spices, and cherry dominate this very affordable red. Try this with a burger. 87 points
Also serve: 2007 Tierre Alta Rerserva Carmenere $12.99, 2007 Rosenblum Heritage Clones Petite Sirah $14.99
2008 Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel $21.99
Cedar, cherry, raspberries, and spices. On the palate: sweet fruits and black pepper. A barbecue wine for sure. 90 points
Main Event Wine
If you want to celebrate, try this wine!
2006 Pierre Usseglio Cuvee Mon Aieul Chateauneuf-du Pape $74.99
Medium color. A wow nose with smoke, blackberries, violets, crushed rock, and earth. Amazing concentration and complex. On the finish it shows multiple layers of flavors and has a firm, tannic structure. This should age for decades. Pair with wild game. 95 points
