Uptown Cafeteria and Support Group
3001 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, 612.877.7263; www.uptowncafeteria.com
appetizers $7-$10, entrees $9-$20
Hours: M-Th: 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.; Fr: 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Sat: 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Sun: 8 a.m. to 1 a.m.
Who should go: Anybody who wishes Minneapolis had more gathering spots, a la the Terrace in Madison. If you started eating all your meals at Cafeteria, eventually you would probably run into every single Minneapolitan you know.
What to order: Big Hippie Salad, Crab Rangoon, and an F-Bomb; the Kobe Beef hot dog at least once, just to try it, the Employee Meal at least once, chocolate layer cake for dessert, the Hangover Helper for breakfast
What to skip: The turkey dinner. The Sloppy Joes. The curry.
Where to sit: Absolutely the Skybar. The inside seats really aren't bad, especially the ones along the open windows, but you're missing the opportunity to take in one of the best views in the city.
When to go: If you want a seat on the Skybar, get there early. Even on a weekday, by 7 or 8 p.m. you'll be waiting in line for the elevator. Don't underestimate Cafeteria as a brunch option, either (house-made Pop-Tarts!). The restaurant's $3 happy hour runs Monday through Thursday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to midnight, but only indoors.
