Rustle up your chaps and cowboy boots and buckle up for a Shitty Barn Session, Hops and Horses, and Tour de Farm this Week in Food.

Wednesday 8/18

  • Summer is fast coming to a close. Enjoy these last warm Wednesdays out on the veranda--or in a shitty barn. The American Swedish Institute hosts its last Summer on the Veranda with live music, lawn games, and Scandinavian food. Enjoy hot dogs, picnic salads, and Izzy's ice cream as well as beer and wine. Visit ASI's summer exhibit "My Paradise," a celebration of Finnish summer homes and take advantage of specials in the museum shop. 4 to 8 p.m.

  • If you're really committed, take a road trip to Spring Green, Wisconsin, where Furthermore Beer hosts its third Shitty Barn Sessions, an evening of live music, beer, and barbecue. Tonight features the music of Meridene, an indie pop-rock band out of Eau Claire. Ten dollars gets you a cup to fill with Furthermore; BYOB grillables. 7 to 9 p.m.

Thursday 8/19
  • The Locavore Buffet at the University of Minnesota's Campus Club is one old country buffet you won't want to miss. Executive Chef Beth Jones creates a smorgasbord of all local, all sustainable, all organic, all delicious grub. This year's lineup includes: braised Stonebridge Farm beef with sweet corn/basil relish; walleye with white wine and lemon cream sauce; stuffed zucchini with wild rice; caramelized onion, peppers, and U of M cheese; tomato caprese platter; and sour cherry pie with buttermilk ice cream.   • Enjoy a Summit with your Seabiscuit at Canterbury Park's Hops and Horses craft beer event. Sample more than 40 varieties of craft beer including Summit, Abita, Red Hook, Goose Island, Widmer Brothers, and Weyerbacher, among others, while watching live racing. $25/$20 advance. 6:30 to 10 p.m.

Saturday 8/21

  • What goes great with opera? Sustainability! Local theater troupe Mixed Precipitation will present Jacques Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman at 14 community garden spaces during the 2010 harvest season. Be there for opening night at the Eat Street Community Garden. Take in the opera, tour the garden, and enjoy locally sourced food samples by Chef Nick Schneider. Call 612-619-2112 for reservations.

  • Be there for the kickoff of Crispin's Landsdowne Artisanal Reserve Cider at Kieren's Irish Pub. Fermented with Irish stout yeast and organic molasses, it's rumored to have a stout-like flavor. The evening will also feature live music and cider specials. 7:30 to 11 p.m.

Sunday 8/22

  • Experience the Home Grown Experience--a new effort by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to promote local, sustainable, and organic food. Watch chef demonstrations by Peace Coffee; Nina Wong of ChinDian Café; and Robin Asbell, an author and private chef. Talk one-on-one with local farmers, community supported agriculture co-ops, food producers, and vintners and brewers. Sip, sample, purchase, and learn about local foods. $35/$25 advance.   • Sad that the Tour de France is over? Tour de Farm! This week's event will be held at Riverbend Farm in Delano. Enjoy a multi-course meal from chefs Mike Phillips of the Craftsman, Jim Grell of Modern Café, and Tracy Singleton and Marshall Paulson of Birchwood Café. Learn about sustainable food and meet local farmers. $50; $15 kids 6-12; free kids five and under. Tickets on sale at Corner Table. 4 to 7 p.m.

Monday 8/23

  • Watch local bartenders go head-to-head at the 4 Orange Vodka Iron Cocktail Competition hosted by Chino Latino. Four bartenders will advance to the semi-finals at Surdyks on September 25, and the final two will compete at City Pages' Iron Fork Competition on October 14. $20 includes appetizers and samples of the drinks. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Heartland.
