Like having a garden in your mouth. In a good way.

Now that so many of our garden's tomatoes are rosy red and fresh with morning dew, we thought we would try a drink recipe utilizing this beautiful bounty. The herb and tomato flavors are bright and pure, while the citrus and juniper are perfect compliments. Feel free to experiment with your herbs--cilantro is also quite good here.

The Gardentini

2 oz. gin (or vodka)
1/2 oz. Cointreau
3 cherry tomatoes or equivilent of a larger tomato, seeded
juice of 1/2 an average sized lemon
1 sprig of basil
a pinch of fennel
freshly cracked black pepper to taste
cherry tomato and basil to garnish
sea salt

Rim a chilled martini glass with lemon and just a touch of sea salt. In a tall glass muddle tomatoes and herbs. Add lemon juice, gin, Cointreau, pepper and ice. Shake and strain through a small sieve or cheesecloth. Garnish with a cherry tomato and basil.
