For this year's Oktoberfest, the Black Forest Inn is bringing a little something special to your table. With a renewed interest in eating all the parts of the animal, BFI' is adding tongue, heart, liver, and kidneys to their Oktoberfest bratwurst bar this Monday. We talked to BFI's Erica Christ about the evening, dubbed the Wurst Night of Oktoberfest, a.k.a.the Offal Night.

Is this the first time you've tried this enhanced brat bar?

This is the second year of the brat bar, but the first with the extras. My dad is calling this the Organ Recital. We buy organic meats from Meadow Pride Farms, and they are always having trouble getting rid of the organs. We have been getting all they can give us and running specials, which has been a success--although they cannot sell lungs or stomach because of the difficulty in processing them correctly. But we plan on featuring the other items soon.

What is the most unusual thing you have had requested?
The old German guys like a whole slew of things. They like it all. Sometimes people ask about headcheese, especially souse, which is similar to headcheese but with pig snout, fat, ears, peppers, and spices. It is very rare. What has been interesting is that in the last year and a half more young people have been ordering kidney and liver--a lot of very sophisticated things. People want more exotic food and are pushing into the offal and stuff, so the time is right. We have high hopes that people are looking for these items, and they will all be there.

Monday's brat bar will include: Handmade bratwurst, handmade chicken curry sausage, Polish sausage, celery relish, fried peppers, fried onions, sauerkraut, homemade Bavarian sweet mustard, maple mustard, horseradish sauerkraut sauce, curry ketchup, rye bread, potato salad, red cabbage, and pickles, all for $14.
Sides include: pan-fried sweetbreads, pickled tongue, heart Bordelaise, and veal liver for $6 each. Or you can get the works for $22. There will also be prizes for the most adventurous eaters.
