Free Juicy Lucys at 5-8 Club on Monday

The 5-8 Club

The Juicy Lucy, which some argue is a religious experience, features molten cheese surrounded by hamburger cooked to perfection placed on a whiter than white bun.

​The 5-8 Club has declared November as Juicy Lucy month, and to celebrate they're giving away free Juicy Lucys from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday at all three locations in Minneapolis, Champlin, and Maplewood.

The club, which has been featured on Travel Channel's Man vs. Food and Food Wars, claims it created the Juicy Lucy in the mid-1950s. (You'll find a parallel version of that story at Matt's Bar.)

Origin story controversies aside, the 5-8's free Juicy Lucys on November 1 isn't the only promotion the club has cooking. The celebration includes a recipe contest, a variety of new Juicy Lucys, and more free food throughout the month. Here are some highlights:

Free Juicy Lucy's for Veterans
On Veteran's Day (November 11) all veterans can get a free Juicy Lucy with valid ID.

Recipe Contest
From November 1 to 16, stop into any 5-8 and submit your recipe for the ultimate Juicy Lucy. Ten recipes will be selected for a cook-off on November 17 at the 5-8 in Champlin. One winner will get $100, and their recipe might be featured on the menu.

New Juicy Lucys
Minnesota Yodeler: a half-pound burger with Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and wild rice.

Senorita Lucita: a burger stuffed with smoked chipotle jack cheese, peppers, and pico de gallo.

The Pig-Pen: a burger stuffed with bacon cheddar cheese and bacon crumbles.

Olive's Ode to Lucy: burger stuffed with cream cheese, sliced green olives, and a hint of garlic.

Juicy Luigi: a burger packed with mozzarella and pepperoni, served with marinara sauce.

Limited Edition Thanksgiving Lucy: Available only in November. This recipe is still being concocted.

Food Drive Discounts
From November 19 to 24, bring a nonperishable food item to 5-8 for the food shelf and get a discount on your bill. Bring one item for $1 off or 10 items for $5 off. (Maximum discount is $5.)
