Wine Shop Sale Week (Today: great deals at South Lyndale Liquors)
Each day this week we are featuring an ongoing wine shop sale and 10 recommendations from each. Today's feature is South Lyndale Liquors, a solid wine shop specializing in wines under $25. Its sale ends Saturday.
Time to load up the cart
While South Lyndale carries major brands, its the shop's boutique producers that stand out. My picks:
BONNY DOON WINES
South Lyndale has one of the better selections of Bonny Doon wines in the Twin Cities, and the prices are great.
Alex Krause Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyards
2009 Bonny Doon Vineyard Muscat Da' del Solo $11.99
Subtle nose of minerals and tropical fruit. The palate offers a touch of sweetness along with minerals, lemon, and tropical fruit. Try this wine with seafood. 87 points
2009 Bonny Doon Vineyard Albarino Ca del Solo $11.99
If Spain made an Albarino this good (I know they do, I just haven't sampled it), I would buy more of this Spanish white wine. Medium gold in color and aromas of floral, minerals, tropical fruit, and spices. Really concentrated wine and good acidity, making a perfect shellfish pairing. 91 points
2009 Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare (Rose) $11.99
A really nice starter rose wine for your party featuring strawberry, minerals, rose petals, and cherry. Good acidity, which will go well with cheese, tapas, and more. 89 points
2009 Bonny Doon Contra $11.99
A candidate for wine of the year under $15, the grape variety is carignane. It offers a fruit-forward nose with cherry, plum, and blackberries. On the palate, spices and cigar combine with the lucious fruit to create a mouthful of flavor. Just drink! 91 points
Also worth sampling from Bonny Doon: the 2006 Le Cigar Volant, which is a Chateauneuf du Pape-inspired wine at $24.99. I gave the 2005 a 94-point score.
PINOT NOIR FROM OREGON
South Lyndale features a nice selection of pinot noir from Oregon from producers such as St. Innocent, Bergstrom, Argyle, and Patricia Green Cellars.
2007 Patricia Green Cellars Croft Vineyard Pinot Noir $29.99
An elegant Oregon pinot featuring spice, floral, earth, and cranberries. This wine should pair well with turkey or wild game. 90 points
2007 St. Innocent Shea Vineyards Pinot Noir $31.99
Just when I thought the '07 white rose from St. Innocent was their best wine of the vintage, the Shea came along. Super-aromatic with spice, white pepper, floral, cedar, and cherry. Multiple layers of flavors on the palate and finish. This wine has one of the longer finishes on an Oregon pinot noir. Well done! 94 points
THE JOYS OF GERMAN RIESLING
2009 St. Urbans Hof Mosel Riesling $11.99
I served this last week at a corporate event along with wines priced $50 and higher, and a third of the guests liked this best. Slate, peach, pear, and apple combine to form a refreshing wine that is not just for summer. 89 points
NOT WHITE ZIN
2008 Green and Red Vineyards Chiles Canyon Zinfandel $20.99
I am a very picky zinfandel drinker, and this one delivers, with pepper, spice, raspberries, and oak. Medium finish. Fire up the grill. 90 points
2009 Villa Maria Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc $11.99
Always good in every vintage with tropical fruit, grapefruit, lemon and minerals. Good acid profile and full of flavor. 89 points
TWINS WINE PARTY CHAMPAGNE?
Let's hope the Twins sweep the Yankees and we can celebrate with:
NV Billecart-Salmon Brut Champagne $37.99
Dough, minerals, apples, pear, and shells. This got better as it got closer to room temperature. 91 points
