|A counter full of beer, wine and goodies|
The Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar in St. Paul is tucked in the corner of the old Northern Pacific Railway Warehouse building, and a relaxed vibe exudes from the lofty space. It's filled with wooden beams, interesting artwork, and a whole host of things to eat and drink, including olives, yogurt, Minnesota-made sodas, coffee, cookies, sandwiches, and more. It has a small but respectable wine and beer selection with varietals like a Scott Family Estate Pinot Noir, a Marchesa Barbera Monferato, two Lift Bridge brews, and three Brau Bros beer options. You can chat with a few pals, type away at your computer, or get some reading done here as you sip on your discounted beverage. And, there's cheap $1 parking after 4 p.m. at two nearby lots.
Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar has a pleasant daily (we love that word) happy hour that suits when you are in the mood for a laid back atmosphere with no whiff of the corporate after-work crowd. You can bring your nondrinking friends and family with you, as there are options for them as well--though not discounted, the coffee and non-alky beverages are reasonably priced. The only tiny letdown is the limited selection of discounted items, although the house wines were a very decent Gran Familia Rioja and HB Picpoul de Pinet when we visited. Plus, if you're craving the hard stuff, this spot only serves beer and wine. That said, the Hot Dish can recommend without reservation the Black Dog's Monday deal--$20 buys you a pizza and a bottle of wine or four glasses of Summit or Premium. That's a fantastic way to get sated for a pittance in Lowertown.
