Great movie and dinner combos for a night in
|Theater prices are for suckas|
He bakes, bread, bread, bread, and where does it get him? Apparently, a night at the opera with Cher. Fridays could end worse than this. A terrific ensemble cast highlighted by the odd pairing of Cher and Nicholas Cage. Sip a little hot veggie love like Olympia Dukakis does in a clandestine dinner with John Mahoney.
4. The Fantastic Mr. Fox and roast chicken
Wes Anderson's sly, quick dialogue is well suited for a fox, especially one voiced so elegantly by George Clooney. Play "Guess the next celebrity voice" as the characters pop up (Mario Batali?) It's easy to empathize while sucking on a crisp, salty skinned chicken leg with the fox. He just can't resist his nature.
3.Once Upon a Time in Mexico and migas
Sure it's a little violent to be eating something slathered in spicy red sauce while watching, but you'll be done with dinner long before you get to the part about losing the eyeball. The high camp, sexy, action style of Robert Rodriguez is fun to watch for all except the overly squeamish. Plus, any movie that involves a cook being killed for preparing a humble dish so perfectly that Johnny Depp must shoot him to restore balance to all of Mexico, inspires a homemade meal prepared only for a small group of trusted, unarmed confidants.
2. Better Off Dead and BLT sandwiches
Actually, fry your bacon--don't boil it--and build an easy, satisfying, portable dinner so you can shake your fist at the screen and yell, "I want my two dollars!" John Cusak might not want to be remembered for his work in this flick, but anyone who lived through the '80s can't forget this cult classic.
1. The Godfather Trilogy and Bucatini all'amatriciana pasta
Who can watch these movies without getting hungry? "Leave the gun, take the cannolli." Bruno Kirby making sweet love to that giant plate of spaghetti as Vito says for the first time, "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse." Even the abominable combination of Sophia Coppola and Andy Garcia rolling out gnocchi as the cringe-worthy kissing cousins all require a heavily poured glass of Chianti and a nice plate of bucatini all'amatriciana. Studded with pancetta and red pepper flakes, it's a volatile, lovely mess of Italian love, not unlike Sonny.
