Do you go for dining deals?

Punch Neapolitan Pizza
Is this a deal or a deal breaker?
Earlier this month, Punch Neapolitan Pizza posted on its Facebook page,
Your ideas needed. We have gotten feedback that big promos make it hard for 'regulars' with long lines. What would be nice, fun smaller scale deals to try out [?]

Punch is known for offering generous discounts, and the Hot Dish has been passing them along to readers. One of the comments on the thread, however, was that publications like City Pages that advertise the deal to a larger audience create a problem for dedicated customers who follow the restaurant's tweets and Facebook posts.

What are your thoughts on dining discounts? Do you take part in deals such as the ones offered by Punch? Do you take advantage of happy hour? Do you use Groupon or LivingSocial? Have you purchased Groupon and found out later you could only use it for full-price items?

My favorite is The Blind Squirrel. Lots of good, local deals. I love to try new places and daily deals put new places on my radar. I ABSOLUTELY will return if the food and service and good. I get the feeling, however, that some employees dislike the daily deals their bosses have authorized. Some servers ask customers up front if they have a "Groupon." Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I don't like the server or kitchen to know that I am using a daily deal. Worst experience? 508 in downtown Minneapolis.

Happy Hour? Of course. Groupon? Sure, when its a good deal and nearby. I live in minneapolis and don't plan on getting a Groupon/Crowd Cut deal for half off a massage in Woodbury. I agree with "rmd"...it's a good deal and worth the wait. If you're a "regular" at Punch and get annoyed by the lines...then you need to broaden your options for eating out at other establishments. There are plenty of great eateries around the metro, so missing one night of Punch pizza won't hurt you.

i have gotten almost every punch discount, and go expecting long lines. it's a good deal, worth the wait. if you don't want to wait - come back another time. if you are a 'regular' just don't go that day.. no big.

i have no comment on crowd cut & groupon. i have bought some of them and they've given us good reasons to try places we were going to try anyway.

for many of the places that offer deep discounts or free stuff like punch, its the only way i would eat at those places.

Not surprised by a bad experience at 508. Then again you dont go to a place like that expecting top-notch dining service.

So, would you ever return to these restaurants without a coupon? My guess is that restaurants want to get customers in their doors with these deals and hope that many of them return, even when there isn't a special discount.
