The MSP airport counterpart to the famous downtown eatery received national honors from Frommers
Frommers, the famous travel guide company, teamed up with USA Today to name 10 of the best airport restaurants in the U.S. this week. The Twin Cities' own Ike's Food and Cocktails nabbed a spot on the list among such esteemed company as Deeb Blue Sushi at New York City's JFK airport and Los Angeles' Encounter at LAX.

Frommers focused on local restaurants unique to each city, usually with a counterpart outside the airport (like Ike's Food and Cocktails' downtown Minneapolis location). "Airports want to create an atmosphere of the city they're in," says Rick Lundstrom, editor in chief of PAX International, a trade magazine that covers airport dining trends. Ike's, an iconic Minneapolis institution, certainly fits in with this trend.

The Hot Dish chatted with Steve Anderson, a manager at Ike's Food and Cocktails' airport location, to get their take on the happy news.

"It's quite an honor," said Anderson, "having our local concept recognized and rated nationally. It highlights our downtown location as well." MSP boasts several other local restaurants unique to our airport, such as French Meadow Bakery & Cafe and D'Amico & Sons Cafe, but it was Ike's that walked away with the prize.

"We had a lot of people come through yesterday holding their USA Today saying, 'I hear you guys have some pretty good food,'" said Anderson.

The restaurant, like its downtown sibling, is a 1940s-themed steak house and lounge. The menu is heavy on American classics like baby back ribs, pot roast, a hot turkey dinner, burgers, and shakes. They have a great breakfast menu as well, featuring such delights as a build-your-own omelet, crab cake Benedict, and their famous Weekender Bloody Mary.

The restaurant is in the Lindbergh Terminal "mall," near checkpoint 1 by concourse E. Swing by the next time you find yourself early for a flight or stuck waiting on a delay. There's no need to suffer through a greasy slice from Sbarro anymore--not with one of the top 10 airport restaurants in the country nestled cozily right down the hall. Enjoy a little bon appetit before your bon voyage.
