The Swede Hollow area of the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood in St. Paul is rich in history. Sitting inside this cafe, in a lovely old building recently painted a bright butternut hue, brings a homey feeling--a perfect destination to indulge in a bit of sugar-drenched decadence in the form of one amazing caramel roll.
The community vibe inside the Swede Hollow Cafe comes on strong, with the brick walls, warm colors, flyers for yoga classes, lattes that come with little sticks of dark chocolate. But since the cafe opened in 1997, the caramel rolls have been all the rage. And for good reason. First, there is the visual: the lovely maple color, the perfectly shaped roll dripping with caramel, the meaty pecans on top. There's the rich, sugared scent of brown sugar and vanilla. There's the tactile perfection of peeling the roll apart, the swirling layers delicate, the texture both dense and light. Finally, the taste--buttery, candied, rich and divine, the pecans adding a great crunch to the velvet of the roll.
While Swedes may be known for their reserve and self-denial, this roll is anything but: It's the dish to order when you need some self-love and indulgence.
