Minnesota Lunch
Get the backstory behind that banh mi you just ate!
Attention sandwich lovers: Check out this new book, Minnesota Lunch: From Pasties to Bahn Mi, which tells stories of the state's cultural and agricultural history though the lens of 11+ sandwiches, among them the dago, the porketta, and the ju(i)cy lucy.

Editor James Norton and a few of his Heavy Table writers talked to walleye fisherman, turkey farmers, chefs, bakers, and restaurant regulars to explain the origins and traditional importance of the sandwiches. The book is as chock full of memories (how Manny of Manny's Tortas decided to come to Minnesota) as it is photos (of an adorable pasty quilt square!) and recipes (the American Swedish institute's recipe for open-face shrimp sandwiches).

Let us know your favorite locally made sandwich and a few reasons why you love it in the comments, and we'll chose one respondent to receive a copy of the book.

Dare I say it? My own Monte Cristo sandwich. French toast for bread, scrambled egg, strawberry jam (or a fruity yogurt, if you prefer), and bacon.

Tied for first is the Tuna Confit sandwich at Be'wiched.

The best sandwich I've had for some time was the BBQ Turkey at Lee & Dee's at the corner of Victoria and Selby in Saint Paul. Pure bliss on a bun, perfectly done. You'll want more than one.

BTW: MrE85 is the DisQus name for Robert Moffitt, aka justplainbob.

I'm in love with Cheeky Monkey's Cubano. I think it's the pickles that really make the sandwich. Soooo gooood.

Aw.. was just beat out on the mention of roast beef sandwich at Clancy's.. Their hot pepper relish is so fantastic! Their meat & Rustica bread are also fantastic - a just plain great combination, and such nice people behind the counter. I think the maker is a big part of a good sandwich.

Juicy Nookie at the Nook. The only Jucy Lucy in town that seems to be able to get the molten cheese right without totally overdoing the meat. Can't wait for them to come back!

My favorite sandwich is The Portobello at Brother's Deli downtown Minneapolis. It is rich and luscious layers of earthy mushroomsa nd cheese balanced out with crisp lettuce - but the special basil sauce is what really pops it over the top. Warning to business lunchers: it will drip down your arm.

The grilled catfish Po'Boy from Sea Salt Eatery. The blending of the grilled catfish, creamy mayo and one of the many, may hot sauces is utter perfection.

The Roast Beef sandwich at "Cheeky Monkey." Blue cheese, spinach and roast beef go so well together. The tender roast beef goes well with the sweet tomatoes and sour onions. The flavors layer so well and makes for a great sandwich.

The Dip over at Crumb in Eden Prairie (of all places, I know) is delicious. Now I grew up in the LA area, where the French Dip was invented (in a dispute among two locations like the Ju(i)cy Lucy) --and for many years I've been prett elitist over the sandwich (which is traditionally dipped by the person making it, not the customer), and most of the more common ones you find, all with aux jus on the side, never tasted as good. However, when I started going to Crumb I actually found an aux jus on the side French Dip that's got me always going back for more. A bigger plus, Crumb is local and used fresh ingredients. For my sandwich dollar, it's my favorite in the Cities.

Jucy Lucy at Matt's. Its simple yet no one can replicate it. It's charred and the cheese is liquified. It's so good I do not bother to wait until it cools down usually burn myself or ruin a tshirt. The place is always packed just to eat this sandwich and they do not even have ice for your beverage!

Mock Duck BBQ Po' Boy from the Triple Rock. Spicy, potato-y goodness. The tortilla chips on the side are a distraction. I've only finished the whole thing a couple of times and have been barely able to move. My mouth is just watering thinking of it...

Whitey's Walleye Sandwich. It is perfectly crispy and includes a bun that is comically small for the fish.

The Curry Mock Duck Banh Mi at Jasmine Deli is my favorite. Very inexpensive and very satisfying, the balance of flavors are perfection- you never get that rubbery sensation of unseasoned mock duck, and the freshness of the vegetables and herbs surrounding the curry flavored proteins makes for a perfect balance. The bread is also sublime, tasting to me like a high quality flaky and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside French bread. It's the perfect sandwich to get to go, and have a treat waiting for some point later in the day (eating inside the tiny Jasmine Deli isn't always the best bet- it's just so scrunched).

Cheeky Monkey's Pot Roast. HORSERADICH CREME FRAICHE & PICKLED RED ONIONS make me yell, especially when they're slathered on ridiculously tender beef pot roast....

Be'Wiched Deli's smoked turkey on ciabatta, hands down. Bacon, dates and goat cheese make it tough for me to order any of their other delicious options!
