Isaac Becker, chef and owner of 112 Eatery and Bar La Grassa, took home the title of Best Chef Midwest at the James Beard Awards last night in New York City.

After the Beard Awards did some geographic redistricting (Chicago moved to the Great Lakes category), Minneapolis has dominated the Midwest category three years in a row, with Alex Roberts (Restaurant Alma) and Tim McKee (La Belle Vie) taking home the honors in 2010 and 2009, respectively.

Sameh Wadi, the chef/co-owner of Saffron, also participated in the Beard Awards as one of the 25 chefs chosen to cook small noshes for gala attendees.

Congratulations to Becker, his wife/partner, Nancy St. Pierre, and the 112/La Grassa staff!

A few years ago the James Beard people split the Midwest into two regions, Midwest (IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD, WI) and Great Lakes (IL, IN, MI, OH), I think because Chicago was so dominant and they wanted to be able to recognize some of the cool things happening in the Twin Cities, Madison, Kansas City, Milwaukee, etc. The judges are from all over the country and they can only vote at restaurants in which they've eaten, obviously, so restaurants located in smaller cities are at a disadvantage.
