Soul Daddy closes two stores, Jamawn Woods moving to MN

Jamawn Woods moves to Minnesota to save his last store.
This week, Soul Daddy shut its New York and Los Angeles locations, with the news bringing along doubt that the concept was perhaps not America's Next Great restaurant.

The company's statement regarding the closures was fairly generic: "After a careful review of the business model and the performance of the restaurants, we have decided that our best opportunity for Soul Daddy's success is a more focused operation." But, presumably, the mostly lackluster "healthy" soul food (here are our first impressions of it) was the reason behind the slow sales.

The Mall of America location remains open and the Star Tribune reports that Soul Daddy's concept originator and co-owner Jamawn Woods is planning to move to Minnesota, having recently put an offer in on a home in Lakeville.

Woods plans to be at the MOA store every day and tweaking the menu to add Hoppin' John (blackeyed peas and rice), corn on the cob, and replace the cold sweet potato salad with a warm yam side.

Eater.com commenters are already snarking about the intelligence of the decision, noting that 5.2% of the state's population is black, a large segment of which includes pork-eschwing Muslims so bye-bye pork, compared to 12.6% for the whole country.

Stay tuned to find out if the changes will save Soul Daddy.

Now they have closed the MN location, too.  That is awful.  I really enjoyed this series, but I would never watch it again knowing they could mess with the winner's life like that.  Closing his entire chain of three restaurants within 8 weeks?!  What kind of prize is that?  They used the show to promoted themselves while promising the winner a life changing chance to run a chain of restaurants.  So basically, I just watched a season of commercials for the Chipotle guy and the other chefs?  They suck and I feel really bad for the Soul Daddy guy.

He was picked because everyone felt sorry for him. How can you let a guiy that cried every episode wanting to just help his family lose?

That said, none ofthe restaurants seemed like thought-out plans besides the Grilled Cheese place.

You are correct, the Grilled Cheese concept (Melt Works) had the best chance. But the investor judges kept screwing with it (dipping sauces for grilled cheese sandwiches?? Really?) and killed it off. I am glad the whole thing fell on it's face. All of the investor judges were arrogant asses. However, I do feel bad for Woods. I understand he relocated to Minnesota.

I wonder how long the MOA location has before it also goes kaput. Maybe after the summer? I'm sure tourists going to MOA are checking out the restaurant they heard about on TV, but that will only take a place so far when their numbers go down.
