Summit releases Unchained #7 week of July 11
Though the mid-July release is still nearly a month away, Summit is already touting the seventh beer in its Unchained Series, Honeymoon Saison. Details about the beer have been announced, as have a collection of release-week events at area watering holes. The creation of Sam Doniach, the newest member of Summit's brew crew, Honeymoon Saison promises to be a deliciously light summer ale, suitable for garden sipping during the mid-season swelter.

Doniach named the beer Honeymoon Ale in part because of the Minnesota honey that is part of the recipe. The name is also a reference to the brewer's wedding that occurs just after the beer's release. In thinking about his beer, Doniach wanted to make something suitable for serving at the celebration. He hit on adding honey to the recipe because of an old tradition of drinking mead (honey wine) during the month following a wedding, the "honey moon."

For those into beer-geekery, here are the specs for Honeymoon Saison as released by the brewery:

The beer, which was brewed last Monday (June 13), is slated for draft release the week of July 11, with bottles coming out the week of July 25. Summit has a number of release events planned around town. You can get your first taste of Honeymoon Saison and chat with Doniach at the following locations:

  • Tuesday, July 12: Grumpy's (downtown) from 5 to 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 13: Stub and Herbs at 4 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 13: Sally's Saloon & Eatery at 4 p.m.
  • Friday, July 15: Tiffany's Sports Lounge from 3 to 5 p.m.
  • Friday, July 15: Fabulous Fern's from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The idea of the Unchained Series beers is to let the brewers at Summit make their own individual statement. Each brewer shepherds a beer from recipe formulation to packaging. Honeymoon Ale is the last beer in the rotation. The plan is to start over again at the beginning and keep the series going indefinitely. Cheers to that.

Cheers,
