Karaoke-inspired cooking and a Kielbasa Festival this week in food

Now that the State Fair has come to an end, is there really a reason to leave the house? After all, you can't get your food-on-a-stick anywhere else. Alas, we must go on, and this week's food events offer hope that post-fair life is worth living (and studded with sausages).

It pains us to even type the word "winterize," but there it is: The Linden Hills Co-Op offers a Winterize Your Garden class to help students come to terms with the fact that the snow will fly soon. Master gardener Dean Davis offers tips on how to properly mulch, replant, and prep your plots for the upcoming Minnesota winter. Sigh. Class runs 6:30-8 p.m. and costs $13 for members, $15 for nonmembers. Sign up by calling 612.922.1159.

This may be one of the more curious cooking classes we've ever come across: "Karaoke Cooking: Sing for Your Supper" is the newest addition to the Midtown Global Market's Kitchen in the Market series. Chef Molly Herrmann will take students through a four-course dinner featuring musically inspired recipes like "Cherry Pie" (savory cherry crostata) and "Pour Some Sugar on Me" (fruit flambé with harissa caramel and bitter orange whipped cream). The class runs 6-9 p.m. and costs $60, with registration found here.

Today also marks the start of Kramarczuk's Kielbasa Festival,a celebration of Northern and Eastern European heritage filled with bands, beer, and piles of food. Tonight the festival runs 5-10 p.m., while Saturday (11 a.m.-10 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.-6 p.m.) are all-day affairs. Gorge on sausages, pierogis, and cabbage rolls, and wash it all down with the free beer you get in your commemorative stein when you buy a $10 ticket. If you're feeling especially ambitious, sign up for the pierogi-eating contest as well.

Up your home-brewing game at Midwest Homebrewing and Winemaking Supplies in Excelsior, where brewing vet Lenny Passofaro will impart tricks and hints for making your next batch the tastiest yet. This 10:30 a.m. class is free (just bring your many brewing questions), but the size is limited, so registration at 952.925.9854 is encouraged.

If you don't have a ticket, don't read any further: The sold-out Surlyfest returns today for it's annual run of beer-soaked buffoonery. A $35 ticket (that you've hopefully already purchased) gets you a commemorative half-liter SurlyFest stein and four beer tokens. Participants can also wander among various food vendors and check out local bands from 2 to 6 p.m.

Show your support for Mill City Farmers Market at the Harvest Moon Dinner, an evening of music and fresh local food from the market's regular members. This al fresco experience by the Mississippi riverfront features heaps of local dishes like watermelon gazpacho, local artisanal breads, braised buffalo in herb red wine sauce, and apple cupcakes.
