Whipping up cocktails at the Modern
The Modern Cafe held a private tasting on Tuesday night to celebrate its new beverage license and its new menu of drinks that highlights classic cocktails. With a short but high-quality list of alcohol brands and house-made sour and bloody Mary mix, the place is giving its customers the chance to have a proper, traditional drink.

The Hot Dish was there to throw back a few and enjoy the fine hors d'oeuvres.

The simple gimlet, made with Greenall's Gin, lime juice, and simple syrup was deliciously sour, with just the right amount of kick and sweetness. It went down nice and crisp and looked lovely in its lowball.

A Manhattan in Nordeast

Next up, the Modern's Manhattan was graced with a small cherry, and the mixture of Bulliet Rye, house vermouth, and bitters packs a real punch. A Champagne Cocktail and Negroni also passed by us, as well as several tasty plates of artichokes, cured meat, sun-dried tomatoes, duck confit on butternut squash and more.

All in all, the Modern Cafe will have nine new (yet old) cocktails, with the French 75, Martini, Sidecar, Old Fashioned and Margarita rounding out the choices. It will have such impressive brands as Moon Mountain Vodka, Death's Door Gin, Oronoco Rum, and others to mix with Stirrings Tonic, cranberry and orange juices, limes, lemons, olives, and brandied cherries. And it will keep a rotating selection of single malt scotches on hand, which justifies a trip to Northeast anytime.
