The Lane Zamprey eases the pain of a fading summer
Lane Zamprey by Jeff Rogers
2112 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis
Autumn is here, and our palates for both food and cocktails are shifting from the lighter to the darker. This week's Drink of the Week finds a happy middle with the Lane Zamprey at the Lowry. This delicious libation is the happy marriage of rye whiskey, lemon juice, agave nectar, Grand Marnier, and Fernet Branca, with Bittercube bitters and an egg white.
It's an excellent example of balance in a cocktail. The rye and Fernet are present and accounted for on the tongue, but the lemon and orange smooth out the edges, while the egg white gives the drink a velvety mouthfeel. The drink is an evolution of a cocktail made by the Lowry's bar manager Jeff Rogers and Barrio's Chad Larson in the Iron Bartender contest when they were given lemon as the secret ingredient. The name of the drink is a reference to Zane Lamprey, the host of TV's Drinking Made Easy, a fun show that blends crafty, nerdy bartending with wild and crazy shot-slamming bartending. Welcome to Uptown Lowry: It's nice to have another place to get a well-made cocktail!
