Clothes made of milk? Now you can wear your dairy
German fashion designer Anka Domaske knows how to milk a fashion trend. Along with a small team of researchers at the Fiber Institute, she has found a way to make fabric out of casein from sour organic milk. Just turn it into powder, heat it, add beeswax and other materials, and spin it and you've got yourself a very expensive garment with the texture of silk. ![]()
Silk from China, Qmilch from Minnesota?
It's not cheap--according to the Associated Press, the fabric runs about $28 per kilogram (or $56 a pound). However, it only takes a quarter gallon of water to produce a pound of 'Qmilch' (as the fabric is being called), as opposed to over 1,250 gallons to produce a pound of cotton fabric. A dress made out of Qmilch costs anywhere from $225 to $300.
Minnesota dairy farmers harvested 714 million pounds of milk in September alone, so there certainly is no shortage. Who knows? Maybe we could become the next fashion capital of the world.
