Haute Dish is not your average brunch fare

A bustling bar makes Sunday brunch fun
The next time you're looking for a Sunday brunch spot, consider Haute Dish. The brunch menu, while small, is chock full of hearty, stick-to-your-ribs goodness. With generous portions and a creative cocktail list to pour over, dress in your comfortable pants and plan to stay awhile.

We waltzed through the front door around noon to an almost entirely packed house and were relieved to spy two empty seats at the bar.

Kick off your meal with some bubbles and order the pomegranate mimosa ($8). The sweet, tart, and fizzy combination will revive you after a rough Saturday night. If you're not a bubbles kind of person, get the frozen screwdriver ($8). Blended orange puree is mixed with house-made vanilla vodka (and it's a delightful amount of vanilla vodka). Our friendly bartender mentioned that it's a favorite drink of the brunch staff after a crazy morning, and we can see why--the drink tastes and smells like an Orange Julius for adults.

For fried chicken lovers, treat yourself to the chicken and waffles ($15). An epic amount of buttermilk fried chicken sits on top of a fluffy sourdough waffle, and then the whole thing is drizzled with bacon maple syrup. The bacon is so smoky you almost feel like you're taking bites of a meat campfire. And we mean that in a good way. The salty crunch of the fried chicken skin, the yeasty waffle, and the sweet syrup are three flavors that are meant to live together. As a bonus, the chicken and waffles also comes with a scoop of maple bacon ice cream.

Unfortunately, the next act, an order of biscuits and gravy ($11), was a bit lackluster. While the cheesy biscuits were a nice twist on a classic dish--the cheese added an extra layer of flavor and texture--the gravy was unmemorable, a standard gravy that could have come from any nameless diner. The collard greens added a nice southern touch, but the amount of maple sausage was a bit meager. As it stands, this dish is average, though a few tweaks could elevate it to stellar status.

We left the bar with full bellies and a happy buzz. That's a pretty good deal for a blustery Sunday afternoon.
