Master Cicerone Nicole Erny
Only four people in the world have earned the right to use the title Master Cicerone™. San Francisco Bay Area beer maven Nicole Erny is the youngest of them and the only female. What is a Cicerone you ask? A Cicerone is the beer-world equivalent of a sommelier; an expert guide to all things beer. Ms. Erny will be in Minneapolis tonight to share some of her expertise. She's doing a beer and food pairing seminar at the Kitchen Window in Uptown. For the beer-curious able to make last-minute plans this is a rare opportunity.

In a two-hour dinner/seminar, Erny will demonstrate approachable pairings to everyday foods such as Caesar salad, margherita pizza, and cheesecake. Using six beers she will show how to create very different effects when pairing with the same dish.

The seminar is tonight, January 26th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The cost is $35 with the beer flight available for purchase for an additional $25. A quick check online this morning showed that tickets are still available, but Kitchen Window recommends advanced registration. You can sign up online using class number 120126A. Or call them at (612) 824-4417.

The Cicerone Certification Program was founded in 2007 by Ray Daniels, a beer-industry veteran and president of the Craft Beer Institute. The program seeks to improve beer quality by certifying the knowledge and tasting skills of those who sell and serve beer. There are three levels of certification; Certified Beer Server, Certified Cicerone, and Master Cicerone. The certification covers five knowledge areas including beer styles, brewing process and ingredients, commercial draft systems, proper service and storage, and identification of off-flavors.
