Sparks food will all come from a wood-burning oven
​Jonathan Hunt, chef and owner of well-loved and oft-visited Minneapolis Italian hot spots Al Vento and Rinata, recently told Minnesota Monthly that he will (quietly) be opening a new restaurant called Sparks in the old Bryn Mawr Coffee Shop space on Cedar Lake Road, bordering the Bryn Mawr and Harrison neighborhoods. 

Will the food carry on his legacy of handmade pastas and mother sauce?

Hunt says he plans to center the menu completely around the wood-burning oven that has been installed there. We've seen other recently opened restaurants, most notably Joan's in the Park, make excellent use of the old pizza ovens their kitchens were already outfitted with, producing moist roasted chicken and fancy cracker-crust flatbreads. Sparks will plan to do the same, with Hunt reporting his food, including homemade pita bread and wood-fire ribs, will have more of a Mediterranean influence.


Hunt's food has never disappointed before, and this concept is sure to serve the surrounding community very well. We know we will be headed just west of downtown as soon as Sparks opens, which will reportedly be by the end of February.
