Sosa Puerto Rican Deli: Try the mofongo
Minneapolis isn't exactly a hotbed of Puerto Rican food, so I was pleased to hear through the grapevine that Sosa Puerto Rican Deli has been dishing out servings of shrimp and pork mofongo for about six months.![]()
If you're not familiar with mofongo, here's a primer:
Fried green plantains are mashed and then cooked and served in a round
ball. Because plantains are, dare we say, a bit bland, mofongo is
served with "juice," a watery mix of tomato, chicken broth, garlic,
onion, and seasoning. At Sosa, mofongo is served with your choice of
pork or shrimp.
Pork mofongo is $8.99 and the shrimp is a dollar
extra. Servings are generous, and it doesn't reheat well, but it is a
ton of tasty food for the price. You'll be eating at a convenience store
and deli with the TV blaring, though you can call ahead with your order
and take it home. That might be a good idea, as seating is extremely
limited. Food is served from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There are also other
options, including chicken with beans and rice, for the slightly less
adventurous.
