While Minnesota chefs and restaurants were well-represented when the semifinalists were announced, fewer were recognized as finalists.

The James Beard Awards are regarded as the Oscars of the culinary world. Here are the local nominees who made the cut:

Andrew Zimmern was nominated for Best Television Series, On Location for his show Bizarre Foods. (Check out our conversation with him about his latest, Bizarre Foods America.)

The locally produced American Public Media team of Sally Swift and Lynne Rossetto Casper were nominated in the category Cookbooks: General Cooking for The Splendid Table's How to Eat Weekends.

Lenny Russo, who year after year has proven that cooking locally is a source of rustic elegance was nominated as Best Chef: Midwest for his restaurant in St. Paul's Lowertown, Heartland Farm and Market Direct.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in New York on May 4.
